Wednesday, January 25, 2012 For the first time in its 62-year history, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department has gone a full year without a fire-related death. A multi-pronged effort by field operations, fire prevention, fire and life safety education and the residents of Fairfax County contributed immeasurably to making 2011 a safe and record-breaking year, according to officials. Additionally, operational firefighting crews’ response to fire incidents, fire inspectors, fire protection retesting and monitoring, fire investigators, and fire and life safety educators, all provided a team effort in stemming fire deaths. Monday, January 2, 2012 GSVFD held its annual Breakfast with Santa on December 10, 2011. Over 500 pancake breakfasts were served while hundreds of children line up to chat with Santa and Mrs Claus. Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire Department is offering free smoke alarms to residents who are in need of this simple but effective life safety alarm but might not be able to afford or install one themselves. For information on requesting a free smoke detector and to schedule a free installation by a member of the Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire Department, contact the station at: 703-451-0120. For Fairfax residents outside of the Springfield area, please contact the station nearest your home.

Saturday, November 5, 2011 05:10 Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a garden apartment fire Saturday, November 5, 2011, at approximately 5:10 a.m. in the Springfield area of Fairfax County. The apartment is located at 7236 Commerce Street. Firefighters encountered heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of a ground floor apartment and rapidly extending upwards to the eaves of the second and third floors upon arrival. The incident commander struck a second alarm, bringing approximately 60 firefighters to the scene of the three story building. It took firefighters approximately 70 minutes to bring the fire under control. Six apartments within the building received some fire, smoke, and water damage, the other five apartments all received some residual smoke and water damage. Fire Prevention Week draws big crowds
Saturday, January 22, 2011 8:00 am At about 8:00am Saturday morning 1/22, units responded to the report of a Townhouse fire on Clowser Ct in Springfield. Three adults and a child who lived in the home had escaped, but a woman was critically hurt suffering from smoke inhalation and flown to Washington Hospital Center. Three 3 firefighters were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The fire went to two-alarms with an EMS Task Force. The Fairfax Fire & Rescue Department reports the fire started in the kitchen of a townhouse. Still pictures can be found on Paul’s Facebook page.
