News Release 12-23
Date: April 9, 2012
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire, Saturday, April 7, 2012, at approximately 4:50 p.m. in the Lorton area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located at 9204 Forest Greens Drive.
Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the entire two-story home upon arrival. The Incident Commander struck a second alarm, bringing over 60 firefighters to the fire scene. Firefighters battled the fire from the interior and exterior; however, the volume of fire was so overwhelming and intense the order to withdraw all inside crews was given. The second floor collapsed minutes later. Firefighters fought the fire from the exterior using elevated master streams. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 25 minutes. Additionally, the residual heat of the fire caused major damage to the vinyl siding to an adjacent home. The high winds also started several brush fires nearby.
A neighbor is credited with rescuing the occupants of the home, two female adults, a juvenile, and dog. The neighbor called 911 and then entered the home to alert occupants, helping them to safety prior to firefighters arriving on scene. Three adults, a juvenile, and a dog have been displaced. Red Cross support was declined by the family. One firefighter was transported for a non-life threatening injury.
The home is a total loss.
According fire investigators, the fire was accidental. An unattended candle on the wraparound front porch caused the fire....

SAVE A LIFE ! Hands Only CPR

Hands-Only CPR
A lifesaving action.
When an adult has a sudden cardiac arrest, his or her survival depends greatly on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby. Unfortunately, less than 1/3 of those people who experience a cardiac arrest at home, work or in a public location get that help. Most bystanders are worried that they might do something wrong or make things worse. That’s why the American Heart Association (AHA) has simplified things.
Don’t be afraid. Your actions can only help.
It’s not normal to see an adult suddenly collapse, but if you do, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest. Don’t be afraid. Your actions can only help. Take a minute and look around the HANDS-ONLY CPR site and invite your friends! Increasing the number of people who know about Hands-Only CPR will increase the chance that someone can help when an adult suddenly collapses, and more lives can be saved.
Check out this video to see Hands-Only CPR in action....

Paramedics Prayer
Lord,
Grant me the wisdom so that I may treat
those of your children that lay at my feet.

Let my hands be gentle, sure and swift
to impart to them your sacred gift.

Let me see only a patient's need
not their color, race or creed.
Help me always to be my best
even when it's on my hours rest.

Grant me the insight to understand why
patients of mine are going to die.
Let me remember that when they do
there is a wonderful life in Heaven with You.

Lord, if in the line of duty I should fall,
help my family to hold their heads tall.
For it was You who decided that I should be
a Medic, one of your chosen few.
Amen...

For the first time in its 62-year history, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department has gone a full year without a fire-related death.
A multi-pronged effort by field operations, fire prevention, fire and life safety education and the residents of Fairfax County contributed immeasurably to making 2011 a safe and record-breaking year, according to officials.

Additionally, operational firefighting crews’ response to fire incidents, fire inspectors, fire protection retesting and monitoring, fire investigators, and fire and life safety educators, all provided a team effort in stemming fire deaths.
